Seaside Living in Sunset Years

Residential center for seniors in Kostrena, HR

Located on the Kvarner Bay, the facility offers both care and support as well as a place for independent living in later life. Our design opens toward the sea, offering all residents exceptional views.

A modern home for later life
The growing demand for care places in the Kostrena region was the starting point for the development of this new residential center. Designed to offer care, support, and medical treatment, the facility provides a new home for seniors and people in need of care, while also contributing to an improved quality of life.

Residential and family-style living
Our architectural concept supports independent living and an active daily routine. It is based on the principle of residential and family-style living – drawing on familiar ways of life to create a homely and community-oriented environment. Care and social support are consciously kept in the background, while community life takes center stage.

Open, shared living areas and generous balconies in each unit create space for social interaction while also allowing for personal retreat.

Sun and sea orientation
The building is being constructed south of the Adriatic Highway in the municipality of Kostrena and offers open views across the entire Kvarner Bay and its islands. The architectural design reflects the functional requirements of the care home, the topography, and the transportation infrastructure. A central challenge was the steeply sloped site leading down to the sea. We responded by dividing the structure into three volumes, which are linked via connecting bridges. The layout and orientation of the rooms were carefully designed to ensure that all residents benefit from natural sunlight and views of the sea.

Mixed-use layout for assisted living and care
The main part of the building consists of a residential care section with a total of 66 units. The program is complemented by specialized areas for people with Alzheimer’s disease and for palliative care. Additional services such as a hair salon, a café, and a small shop are also planned.
