Recovery with a view of the countryside

Ward and intensive care unit, Lauf Hospital

The Lauf district hospital from the 1960s/70s was extended and rebuilt several times. The steadily increasing number of patients required long-term planning. After winning the competition, ATP was commissioned with the planning of the 4th construction phase.

The 64-bed hospital in Lauf sets a new standard in the district of Nürnberger Land. The new building with intensive care unit has significantly improved the operational organization of the “overformed” hospital. The proximity of the extension to the central functional areas - operating theater, endoscopy and radiology - ensures shorter patient routes and optimized supply and disposal processes.

Architecture – functional & aesthetic
Our aim was to combine the previous, heterogeneous building masses into a harmonious unit and to strengthen the overall appearance. The original, economic and functional structure is characterized by a main axis running from west to east and south-facing wings of the ward block. The compact, three-storey building was erected at the rear of the hospital, while the extended western patio closes off the complex towards the “Kunigundenberg” and architecturally emphasizes the terraced hillside location.

Healing ambience
The concept takes into account the needs of patients and staff alike. The demolition of the old administration building and the relief of the main building enabled a new spatial organization and optimal use of space. The interior design is characterized by light-flooded, bright rooms with an open orientation towards nature. This friendly atmosphere is intended to promote patient recovery and provide a pleasant working environment.

Space program
The striking and bright new building comprises two nursing levels (internal medicine and surgery), each with 32 beds. The administration level was integrated into the floor above. The intensive care unit was given three additional beds and a shock room. A connecting building ensures close interaction with the existing building. The new nursing wards are flexibly linked to the existing ward block thanks to the ring development, which enables the flexible organization of several wards on one level.

With this construction project, we have made an important contribution to improving healthcare for the citizens of the district of Nuremberg Land and set the course for the future.
