New Ward Building

Klinikum Passau

The new building not only expands the hospital’s urgently needed capacity but also enhances the quality of medical care in the region. Its people-centred architecture creates a healing environment for patients and provides an optimal workplace for medical staff.

Since its establishment in 1929, Klinikum Passau has become a major hospital with a series of specializations. In order to deal with overcrowding and a lack of space, a new ward building has been designed to strengthen the hospital’s position as a leading healthcare facility in eastern Bavaria.

Focus on health

The architectural design supports hospital operations and promotes efficient workflows. Our healing environment approach aims to create a setting that facilitates patient recovery while ensuring an optimal working environment for medical professionals.

The new building containing wards and functional areas is divided into two main elements with four stories above-ground and two basements. This central division and three generous atria fill the spaces with daylight and create an agreeable atmosphere for both employees and patients. In addition to this, the atria provide ventilation to the social and working spaces in the heart of the compact complex.

The design of the new building refers to its existing neighbors while also respecting the urban scale of the surroundings. The building which contains the geriatrics center and rehabilitation area steps back at third floor level in order to reduce the impact on the adjacent pediatric clinic. The u-shape of the care center reduces travel distances to the patient rooms.
