A non-monotone modular building

Vogelkamp Neugraben, site tender process for apartment buildings

Residential buildings that promote a strong sense of togetherness: This guiding principle provided the basis for our design of a versatile building ensemble with maximum modularity that is notable for its high quality of sustainability, community, and visitor experience.

Attractive living space
“Vogelkamp Neugraben,” one of several development areas in the Hamburg district of Neugraben-Fischbeck, should become home to an ensemble of rental apartment buildings designed in line with the slogan “living close to nature,” which blend harmoniously into their surrounds and appeal to a range of target groups. Our concept opted for a flexible, cost- and time-efficient approach based on resource-friendly construction and prefabricated timber modules.

Better together – with a good sense of neighborhood
Creating a sense of community was the primary idea behind our creation of a range of meeting places that should reinforce not only the quality of the individual experience but also the sense of togetherness. Children’s play areas, communal gardens, sport zones, and relaxation spaces become meeting points. In addition to this, the individual volumes of the ensemble are connected by bridges. This creates efficient rescue and emergency escape routes that serve as communication and communal zones on an everyday basis. The comprehensive energy concept offers not only a sustainable building method but also a minimizing of the energy requirements, which creates the ideal conditions for meeting the EG40 standard. The use of renewable sources to provide 100 % of the energy required by the residential units means that EE-Plus requirements are also met.

Many roads lead us home
Besides the variety of residential accommodation, the different ways of arriving at the apartments offer a further range of experiences. Many residents have the option of reaching their homes via internal or external pergolas.

We wanted the building to remain fascinating for users rather than offering a monotone experience. This is why there are different ways of reaching the apartments. And this solution also creates multiple zones for meeting the neighbors.

The ensemble consists of three buildings, two of which are enhanced by a further smaller building. The combination of the timber modules to create a range of apartment typologies creates an attractive residential mix with a high quality of visitor experience. The alternation of the open fronts to the modules with their rigorously closed side walls generates richly modeled timber facades. In addition to this, each residential unit has a balcony, a loggia, or a terrace. Full-height window openings give the entire complex a light and friendly atmosphere.
