„City Pop“ Frankfurt
Topping-out ceremony of modern residential complex
Urban Living in Frankfurt: The completion of the shell & core structure of the unconventional residential project in Frankfurt’s Westend marks a key milestone. The striking urban planning solution highlights the building’s role as a starting point of the quarter as well as a physical and acoustic barrier to the adjacent railway.
The residential complex with urban micro-apartments is being built next to the Westhafen on the site of the former thermal power station of Deutsche Bahn in line with plans revised by ATP architects engineers. The building acts as the starting point of the quarter and is designed as a sound barrier against the adjacent railway tracks. Conceived as a wall to the railway embankment, it forms a clear urban and acoustic boundary. This function is optically reflected in the east facade: the layout of the windows is based on the sequence of the notes of Pink Floyd’s “The Wall.”
The residential complex consists of two apartment buildings of 10 and 11 stories that are connected by a bridge and contain a total of 342 micro-apartments. Two single-story pavilions offer room for communal spaces and an area for parking bicycles. The rooftops, which offer views of the River Main and the city skyline, will become home to a roof garden with pavilions for sports and events.
The need to completely separate the building from the adjacent busy railway line provided a particular structural engineering challenge. And the thermal insulation and the efficiency of the building services were improved in order to minimize the building’s CO₂ footprint. This enabled the building standard to be raised to KfW 55 EE.
