Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier

A very special topping-out ceremony for a very special project

Hamburg, 30.08.2023

In the heart of the HafenCity in Hamburg the Westfield-Hamburg-Überseequartier is being developed, an extraordinary urban construction project with equally extraordinary dimensions. ATP architects engineers has been accompanying this major project as Chief architect and main coordinator among others.

Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier is a unique concept, whose ensemble of 14 buildings and total area of 419,000 m² lends it extraordinary dimensions. The innovative major project has been coordinated by ATP Asymetria, formerly IMB Asymetria, since 2018. The reaching of a key milestone in the construction phase was marked by a topping-out ceremony.

A collective of well-known architecture and interior design offices from Düsseldorf via Amsterdam to Paris is working together to develop the prominent quarter in one of Europe’s most exciting urban construction projects. ATP Asymetria is acting as chief architect, coordinating the working processes of all the architects and engineers involved in the project and making a significant contribution to the realization of the vision of Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier as a dynamic meeting place for locals and tourists. ATP is also responsible for the execution design of individual elements and the public open spaces, the interior design of the retail spaces, and the implementation of design changes.

High sustainability standard
More generally, the complex structure is the first major project to be awarded DGNB certification for sustainable building sites. A long list of measures including the protection of resources, the use of recyclable materials in the construction, and energy-saving solutions embodies the high sustainability aspirations of the clients, Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield. The objective of using the new quarter to set new sustainability standards is particularly welcomed by ATP architects engineers.

Mixed-use concept
With a total of over 300 guests as well as over 1,300 people working on the project, the celebration underlines the importance of the urban quarter. The unusual mixed-use concept in the heart of HafenCity Hamburg consist of around 579 apartments, three hotels, offices with around 4,000 workplaces and a wide range of shopping, restaurant, cultural, and entertainment space including a flagship cinema. Another highlight is a terminal for cruise ships with an underground bus station.
