The Basler Verkehrs-Betriebe (BVB) commissioned us to plan the new construction and overhead line workshops after our conceptual study won first prize in the competition. The goal was to critically reassess BVB’s existing concept to optimize both process flows and building volumes. The result is an economically compact design with an energy-efficient infrastructure that minimizes both building volume and land use.
Urban integration with sensitivity
Our concept is based on an ensemble of two understated structures that integrate harmoniously into their surroundings. Special consideration was given to the adjacent, listed Wolfgottesacker Cemetery. The restrained facade design further underscores this approach, with only a distinctive green stripe referencing BVB’s corporate identity.
Materiality as a unifying element
Although the two main buildings are functionally and structurally distinct, they share a consistent material and formal language. The facades combine exposed concrete with perforated metal panels, applied in inverse configurations for each building. This approach creates visual harmony while accentuating the individual functions of the structures.
Efficiency in line with the Minergie standard
The buildings are designed according to Minergie standards, aiming for at least 20% energy savings compared to existing structures. Their reduced cubic volume optimizes spatial efficiency, while the modular facade system allows for flexible future adaptations. Features such as individually adjustable sun shading, improved cooling and heating systems, and a landscaped courtyard roof garden enhance user comfort and optimize the microclimate. Additionally, the choice of materials prioritizes low environmental impact by favoring regional products and minimizing transport distances.
