Architectural Delicacy

Handl Tyrol, Haiming

The production company Handl Tyrol decided not only to build a brand-new facility but also to do so in line with the motto “Doing the old in a new way.” Our pursuit of the holistic approach inherent to integrated design led to the award of the well-known industrial building prize “Factory of the Year” in 2020.

The requirement and objective of the modernization of the production facility of the traditional company from Tyrol’s Upper Inn Valley was to build a modern, linear, and fully automated operation that meets the guidelines of both the IFS (International Food Standards) and the USDA (US Department of Agriculture). These enabled us to plan a state-of-the-art production facility for the Tyrolean ham specialties – including for export to new markets.

Effectiveness through integrated design
By supporting the client’s core process, integrated design with building information modeling (BIM) enabled us to create a solid basis for taking decisions and, hence, to increase quality and provide cost and timetable certainty at a very early stage. ATP used BIM to create a digital twin of the production building that was also eventually used by the facility managers. The production process is supported by the latest robot technology. The use of driverless transport systems (DTS) permits the efficient transport of goods between the individual production areas.

The energy concept was also tailored to and adapted in line with the sustainable and flexible use of the building elements. For example, almost 100 % of the annual heating requirements are met by heat recovered from the cooling plant. The ventilation and air conditioning plant was designed in line with the EU’s highly energy-efficient ECO Design Directive from 2018. In order to do justice to the demand for optimum wellbeing, the lighting concept of the production spaces is determined by modern, biorhythmically conceived LED technology and zonal lighting based on the specific visual tasks.

New dimensions of food production
The new ham production facility consists of the new production building and a two-story social and technical block. The initial phase consisted of the construction of the building complex. The holistic and comprehensive digitalization concept and the clarity and modernity of the production building also ultimately led to the award of the well-known prize for industrial building.
