Climate-neutral brewery
Flötzinger Brauerei in Schechen
The new Flötzinger brewery in Schechen in Upper Bavaria represents an important milestone for the historical company as it travels the road towards climate neutrality. With the help of the “ATP CO₂ Tool,” ATP architects engineers evaluated the CO₂ emissions of the construction and operation of the building as a means of minimizing both its gray and red emissions.
A shortage of space at its existing plant in Rosenheim convinced the traditional brewery Flötzinger to build a second facility in nearby Schechen. From the starting point of the existing masterplan by Krones, ATP used an integrated design process as the basis for developing a state-of-the-art and particularly environmentally-friendly brewery, which is being realized in a number of phases. The functionally designed new building with filling plant, tank farm, and brewhouse will ensure that the company can grow healthily long into the future.
ATP’s preliminary project already provided the cornerstone for the climate-neutral building concept: With the help of the “ATP CO₂ Tool,” the design team calculated the CO₂ emissions of both the building and operating phases in order to reduce gray and red emissions to a minimum: For example, the choice of a timber roof structure and facade cut CO₂ emissions by 1,186,000 kg in comparison with a reinforced concrete roof structure and paneled facade. The sustainable building services concept with heat pump and large roof-mounted photovoltaic plant reduces the operating energy far below the CO₂ benchmark set out in the ATP Green Deal and, hence, also far below the legal requirements of the EU Green Deal.
The brewery is notable for its clear, functional volume and its harmonious formal language: High-grade, natural materials – especially timber – and transparent insights deep into the interior communicate the company’s principles of regional connectedness and high-quality brewing to the outside world.
