Timber as a Source of Identity

CLT plant with office building for Theurl in Steinfeld

Timber building expertise in its purest form: A high-tech production plant for cross laminated timber and an office building were built at the new facility of Theurl, the manufacturer of timber products – from the very material that is produced by the company. The result is a corporate “building as exhibition object.”

A high-tech plant for cross laminated timber elements (CLT) with an adjacent office building: The East Tyrolean timber company Theurl selected a site of around 12.5 hectares in Steinfeld in Carinthia for its new production facility. The two buildings with very different functions were designed as a harmonious ensemble that merges discreetly into the surroundings. A special detail: Construction phase 1 (CLT plant) produced the timber elements from which construction phase 2 (office building) was built.

An office building that was made in-house
The unusual fact that the client produces their own building materials influenced the entire design and construction process. And the production of these CLT elements “next door” to the office building meant that the project was particularly environmentally friendly. The transport distance for the building materials: 200 meters. The choice of CLT also encourages a sense of identity amongst the employees: As they work they are surrounded by their own products.

Wood, as far as the eye can see
The ATP design team made skillful use of the sustainable building material wood in both the interior and the exterior: in the striking vertical spruce slats that cover the glass facade, the horizontal larchwood strips of the balconies, the generous reception area, and the columns, beams, and ceiling elements in the atmospheric offices. With the exception of the reinforced concrete stair tower, the building is entirely made of wood.

Flexible working environments
The spaces of the office building are notable for their interior design and highly flexible organization. The integration of loadbearing columns into the facade allows the interiors to be adapted to meet new needs and situations at any time. There are just six columns within the building, which allows it to accommodate a full range of working scenarios – from individual to open plan offices.

High-tech plant
Thanks to integrated design with BIM (Building Information Modeling), the production building of around 20,000 m² is perfectly aligned with the process – for producing an average of 100,000 m³ of cross laminated timber every year. With its anthracite-colored, standing seam profile facade, the 200-meter-long and 15-meter-high building makes its own statement in the landscape without appearing alien. Bespoke sound and dust protection measures minimize the impact on the inhabitants of the neighboring town of Steinfeld.
