ATP is paying even more attention to the water consumed by a building in line with the “ATP protects water resources” component of our ATP Green Deal for sustainable integrated design. And we are doing so successfully with the help of our newly developed ATP Tool, an innovative technology that will intensely accompany our future sustainable integrated design work.

Our ATP Water Tool allows us to create the best preconditions for protecting water resources in the real estate sector in line with the ATP Green Deal.

How the ATP Water Tool works
The principle of the tool is based on the water consumption parameters of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB), which rates the demand for drinking water and volume of waste water. We add information about processing water as well as other consumption parameters and calculate local annual rainfall figures depending upon the area of sealed ground. In order to calculate the water requirements of a building, we examine use dependency, the installation-specific connection values, additional water consumption, and the use of reprocessed waste water and rainwater.

The comparative method works excellently with the ATP Water Tool: This is why two different building variants are immediately calculated: firstly, the planned version and then, additionally, an alternative with optimized water consumption such as a building that meets the requirements of EU Taxonomy.

The relative values from such a comparison are decisive factors for both the integrated design process of ATP architects engineers and the consulting activities of ATP sustain. The new tool enables us, on the one hand, to present an “ideal variant” of a building and, on the other hand, to calculate how different designs could impact upon water consumption and, hence, the ecological footprint. In the first case, we are speaking about a building that meets the requirements of both the client and the EU or – in the context of the ATP Green Deal – ourselves. In the second case, we are reinforcing our consultancy expertise because we are able to concretely justify certain decisions: This can involve the selection of fittings and sanitary objects, the local use of natural water resources and rainwater, or the reprocessing of waste water.

Comprehensive information about the sustainability of buildings is essential to both the design work of ATP and the consultancy work of ATP sustain. The more information we are able to share with our clients during the early design phase of a building, the better we will be able to prepare them for the future on the basis of serious prognoses. This is decisive not only due to EU Taxonomy regulations, but also for corporate accounting. And such data that underpins the design in the context of the EU Green Deal are also key assets in competitions: because sustainability and environmental protection are becoming unavoidable factors right across the real estate sector. And that’s a good thing!
