„Haus der Gerichte“
Prizewinning idea from ATP Munich for the future of the Justice Center in Munich
The “JustizzentrumErhalten” initiative has spent the past 18 months fighting for the retention of the demolition-threatened Justice Center in Munich. In order to underline the potential of the existing structure, an Open Call seeking ideas and concepts for the future of the building was launched in March 2024. The jury named 13 winning projects, including ATP Munich’s design for an Urban Food Lab.

It was important to us to take part in the local debate about this building and to make clear our support for the retention, in the broadest sense, of existing built fabric. Our vision argues that the central urban location and the size and robustness of the building call for a new use that goes beyond the local and addresses a global issue.

The building offers space for:
Urban Farming Lab: This carries out practical research into how food can be grown locally for the urban population with minimal delivery journeys. Startups and universities work side-by-side on the development of methods and concepts for the near future.
Haus der Esskulturen: This academy researches into, teaches about, and shares questions regarding global and urban food.
Schule des Kochens: Here, the artisanal basics of cooking are communicated practically. The Cooking School is part of the educational offering and an ambassador for ethical cuisine.
Markthalle und Kantine: Harvested and cooked foods are sold here and eaten as street food “straight from the field.”
Forum: A central location for debates, events, and readings, etc.
Kino des guten Geschmacks: This cinema shows films related to the subjects of eating, nutrition, and agriculture: La Grande Bouffe; Supersize me!; Ratatouille; Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; Jiro Dreams of Sushi; Chocolat; Soulkitchen, etc.
Energy sail
A vertical urban farm is extremely energy-intensive. The energy sail uses photovoltaic and wind power to generate part of the required electricity while also forming a signal that can be seen from afar.
We all have to eat. But where does our food come from and how is it produced? The food cycle should interest all of us. This project has space for many new ideas about “food production” that can be made visible with the help of the Justice Center. The suggestion has the potential to permit a complete redefinition and reinterpretation of the building.
