A green oasis for research and recreation

ZAL III Center of Applied Aeronautical Research

The concept of the ZAL III project puts particular emphasis on the integration of nature and urban comfort. The combination of green spaces, bicycle infrastructure and well-planned recreational areas creates a space that is both ecologically sustainable and functional, and increases the well-being factor for visitors.

Urban Development Concept
ZAL III expands the research campus of the Centre for Applied Aeronautical Research in Hamburg Finkenwerder. The construction site is located south-east of ZAL I/II and is connected by a road and a green zone. The new 5-storey building blends harmoniously into the urban landscape and forms a new ‘high point’ in the area, together with ZAL I/II and the Europacenter.

Nature and green areas
The project emphasizes the importance of nature. A massive tree population on the southern and eastern side of the site creates a natural separation between private and public areas and is integrated into the open space of ZAL III. The existing access road to the car park remains separate from the accessible area. The front and rear areas are connected along the green space. Additionally, an optional cycle path is being introduced to facilitate access to the bicycle parking spaces.

Rooftop garden and seating options
The rooftop garden of ZAL III combines nature and comfort in the best possible way: with its lush greenery and a variety of culinary options, it offers the perfect place for any occasion. Alongside its visual appeal, the garden helps to promote biodiversity and has a positive impact on the environment. With shady spots and comfortable seating options that are harmoniously embedded in the natural surroundings, it also supports the well-being of the visitors.
