Kristallfabrik

Swarovski Kristallfabrik, Wattens, AT

Optimized working processes, maximum flexibility, and LEED Gold certification: The comprehensive sustainability concept and rigorous architectural language of the new crystal production facility is a response to the rapid advances in Industry 4.0.

Sustainable and innovative production facility
The task of designing a crystal factory that serves as not only a production plant but also a symbol for innovation, sustainability, and aesthetic excellence is tailor-made for us as integrated designers. We believe that good design and ecological responsibility go hand in hand. Our role was to create an inspiring and functional working environment that sets standards for Industry 4.0 while minimizing the ecological footprint.

An appearance that combines transparency and secrecy
The crystal factory is located next to the busy visitor complex of the Swarovski Kristallwelten with its striking “giant.” The building is designed to communicate and interact with its surroundings. A 360-m² screen-like window is positioned in the middle of the facade of the production building. This reflects the panorama of the Inn Valley by day, while the internal glare protection means that it begins to glimmer at nightfall. This special glass surface makes it possible to efficiently use daylight in the interior while protecting Swarovski’s crystal-manufacturing secrets from curious onlookers. Overall, the filigree surface to the “screen” and the slatted elements that are elegantly integrated into the facade create an impressive aesthetic effect.

The striking screen format of the glazed facade gives the industrial building a window that can keep a secret. In designing the facade we successfully met the demanding aesthetic requirements of the facility without offering views of its highly sensitive internal processes.

A model factory for sustainability and design
The design meets the highest standards for modern industrial building. The short distances within the building, generous volumes, ample ceiling heights, and flexible expansion zones ensure optimal working processes. The crystal factory meets the requirements of Industry 4.0 and fulfills the highest sustainability standards due to the involvement of ATP sustain. Operated with 100 % green electricity it was awarded Gold Certification in line with the LEED-v4-System.
