The Mobility Center Experience

Mobility Hub Elbinseln

A mobility experience beyond the private car: This was our motto as we designed an innovative mobility hub in Hamburg. Our concept, which was awarded 2nd prize, offers the “mobile” user a range of fascinating options for shopping, entertainment, and simply hanging out.

A trailblazer for the coming mobility transformation
Hamburg’s HOCHBAHN AG is planning a forward-looking mobility hub with a range of further attractions right next to Veddel station. Our conceptual idea defines such a mobility hub as an experiential location where the essential functional aspects are enhanced by a high quality of visitor experience that can be enjoyed by every user. Our prize-winning project proposes a sustainable and completely new building typology with a high recognition value. And other aspects that were particularly important to us included the maximum revitalization of the urban realm, the efficient use of the site, and a clear structure.

Rather than just designing a public facility that highlights the mobility of tomorrow, we also wanted to create a high-quality environmentally-friendly space in which people want to come together and spend some time.

Ecological and efficient as a symbol of the mobility transformation
The new mobility center stands for a “green future” and offers environmentally-friendly alternatives to the private car. We integrated this idea into our concept – with a range of measures designed to reduce energy consumption and CO₂ emissions and to conserve resources. These include a PV system and extensive planting of the roof and the facades in order to support biodiversity. The many green zones of the external landscaping concept also enable the building to retain rainwater. This can be used for irrigation, cleaning the external areas, or washing the vehicles in the bus depot.

A range of options with a uniform look
The facilities to be created on the around 19,000-m² site include a bus interchange with waiting areas, parking spaces for bikes, various vehicle sharing options, a depot for electric buses, and workshops for HOCHBAHN. Our design is notable for its clear structures, which facilitate both simple orientation and quick and uncomplicated transfers and connections. It also has extensive green and open spaces and a range of shopping and other visitor areas. This wide and diverse range of services contrasts with the uniform external appearance: The striking facade with its vertical strips and extensive greenery creates a sense of identity for the mobility hub and lends it the appearance of a strong, single entity.
