Corporate Campus

engelbert strauss, Biebergemünd

The requirements for the project for the new headquarters with flagship store included an open construction method, high-quality design, and generously dimensioned cooperation and communication spaces. After winning a competition, we were commissioned to integrally design an ecologically, economically, and socially sustainable building complex.

The objective of the expansion by engelbert strauss, one of Europe’s leading mail-order specialists and brand manufacturers for workwear, shoes, and protective working gear was clear: The new headquarters, the “engelbert strauss Unternehmenscampus,” with its office, training, and retail spaces, should offer an open and modern working environment to around 300 employees. The architectural challenge was to arrange the complex within the topography of a site of around 50,000 square meters between open landscape and an industrial zone in a way that optimally exploited the relationship with nature.

Naturally embedded
The tight sequence of buildings follows the topography of the site, underlining the link with nature and effortlessly slipping into the space between the open landscape and the existing building. The different areas – offices, training, and retail – can be clearly read from outside and merge together to create a whole. Alternating redbrick facades, large areas of glazing, and shimmering external cladding enhance the unity of the ensemble.

High quality, modern, communicative
A large open stair in the foyer, the elegant centerpiece of the headquarters, symbolizes openness and communication. This connects the different access levels for employees and visitors. Glass, timber, and fair-faced concrete underline the modern, striking spatial impression of the hall, which is dominated by visible V-columns that rise through the building. With their high-quality materials, high levels of daylight, and views out onto nature, the workspaces of the office areas provide an inspiring working environment.

Integrally and sustainably designed
The headquarters consists of three to four-story blocks with flexible office use and a two-story workshop. On the basis of ATP’s own resource-friendly concept, the energy needs are covered by regenerative sources such as solar and geothermal power. The workwearstore® takes center stage for the customers as a landmark lining Frankfurter Straße. The retail area of the store is notable for the open, visible installation of the building services elements. The similarly visible roof structure has a free span exceeding 31 meters.
