School Building with Campus

Sustainable school expansion receives an award

Konstanz, 19.07.2024

The project for the expansion of a school in Konstanz using a hybrid timber construction – and for its rich variety of open spaces – was honored in the competition.

ATP architects engineer’s entry to a realization competition for the expansion of and building of a new sports hall for Heinrich-Suso-Gymnasium in Konstanz has been awarded an honorable mention. The concept, which was developed in cooperation with the landscape architects adlerolesch GmbH, convinced the jury with its separation into two volumes for teaching and sport. With its staggered organization, this building is a positive surprise in both functional and urban terms.

The project is notable for its well-thought-out entrance area, its clear internal orientation, and its short distances. The spatial proportions and organization of the floor plans were equally well received.

The proposed hybrid timber construction, in front of which a light steel framework is positioned, is convincing in terms of both construction and material. The facades, which are given a rhythm by glazed and closed building elements, reflect the different uses of the building volumes and support the functional separation between the teaching and sports areas. According to the jury, the overall project is a good competition entry that is appropriate to the task and is notable in terms of both its spatial relationship with its existing surroundings and its internal organization.
