ICONIC AWARD 2024
Plodine Tower honored as a high-rise icon
ATP architects engineers has won another prestigious ICONIC AWARD. On this occasion, the prize has gone to a challenging revitalization project in Rijeka, Croatia: the Plodine Tower.
The previously half-finished and unused office tower is now a “nearly-zero-energy-building.” Following a comprehensive functional and technical refurbishment, the modernized, 16-story tower with its new climate-resilient facade is shining like a glimmering “crystal on the sea.” As a vertical icon, it now dominates the urban silhouette on Kvarner Bay.
Minimal intervention for maximum impact
The complex revitalization of the never-completed postmodern high-rise building represented a complex challenge. As the prestigious headquarters of the retail company Plodine, the tower had to be remodeled to perfectly meet the functional needs of the client while also being economically and ecologically sustainable. We successfully implemented ATP’s integrated design process with BIM in line with the resource-friendly maxim of “as little as necessary and as much as possible.” While meeting all the strict constructional and urban planning requirements, we not only took full account of the existing basic geometry in our redesign of the facade, but also retained the existing structure, a reinforced concrete envelope with all the associated restrictions – with the exception of a small number of complex structural adaptations.
We wanted to give the building a new visual and functional value. Hence, we developed the vision of a clifftop crystal that reflects the movement of the sea and of the clouds in the sky. The idea was successful – as wonderfully confirmed by the ICONIC AWARD.
